CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Ranmaru Mori
AGE: 19
CANON: Samurai Warriors

CANON HISTORY: Wiki link
CANON PERSONALITY:
Ranmaru’s most defining trait is undeniably his loyalty. The decision to give up his life to protect Nobunaga when Akechi Mitsuhide turned against the latter during the Honnoji Incident is the most prominent example of that. However, he did prove his allegiance to the house of Oda multiple times, especially in various battles when he mercilessly killed everyone in his lord’s way if asked, seeking Nobunaga’s approval at the same time. His strong sense of duty is his main drive, whether it’s for his lord’s or his family’s sake. For example, when his father was killed, Ranmaru promised to avenge him and carry on Mori family’s legacy while serving Nobunaga.

That said, since he’s always ready to sacrifice his life to accomplish whatever orders he was given, he doesn’t value his own life as much as he should and is quite straightforward about it to that extent he’s often reprimanded by other people to care about himself more. For instance, Gracia Hosokawa is almost offended by his acceptance of death and not only makes an attempt to change his way of thinking but also tries to befriend Ranmaru in order to show him that there are people who care about him and would grieve after his death. While Ranmaru seems to understand that and appreciates the girl’s kindness, yet it’s not that simple for him to change his ways.

His extraordinary selflessness is very likely the reason behind that. His lord’s safety is always his highest priority and he’ll do anything it takes to ensure it. While the Warring States era was a period of intense and violent battles, Ranmaru proved himself worthy of serving Nobunaga not only on the battlefield but also during other missions. Once, he was sent to spy on another powerful warrior of this era, Uesugi Kenshin. To do that, Ranmaru had to disguise himself, and his choice was to sneak into Kenshin’s camp as a monk. However, because of his appearance, he was thought to be a female instead of a monk, and in the end, he wasn’t let inside for that reason.

The reason why he needs to prove himself all the time besides already having been acknowledged by Nobunaga may be tightly connected to his appearance, actually. Ranmaru, known for his beauty, isn’t always taken seriously by his enemies and allies alike, who often mistake him for a woman and in some cases, even offer to help a “lady in distress”. On top of that, he’s a rather young warrior which doesn’t make things any easier for him in the long run.

As mentioned above, even though Nobunaga acknowledged his skills and value him as his retainer, Ranmaru, instead of resting on his laurels, always strives for perfection when it comes to serving his lord. That is because not only he became Nobunaga's page at an early age, but also because he deeply admires the man and his vision of how to rule the country. In consequence, he’s even ready to turn against his mentor, Akechi Mitsuhide who makes his decision not to follow Oda and rebel against him. The admiration isn’t one-sided, however, as Nobunaga often praises his page.

While his lord is obviously the most important person to him and receives somewhat special treatment, it doesn’t mean that Ranmaru isn’t polite and kind to other people. He treats people with respect, taking their position and age into account. Acts of kindness directed at him, however, usually genuinely surprise him; Gracia’s willingness to become his friend and the keepsake she offers him are considered as such, making Ranmaru try to repay Gracia’s sympathy, even at the cost of risking his life when he returns to burning Honnoji Temple to save her.

To sum up, Ranmaru is a diligent warrior and his unyielding devotion to Nobunaga is often given as an example of a brave and loyal page who, despite his young age, would throw away his life and die alongside his lord. He seems to have two contradictory sides as he can be a merciless killer and a kind, selfless (to a fault, even) young boy, but considering that the era he was living in is known for its brutality and unforgiveness, it was what it took in order to survive, perhaps. Of course, it could also be Nobunaga’s influence, who is known for his exceptional violence in battle. Either way, it’s indisputable that he did everything to ensure Oda’s safety and to help him make his dream of ruling the land come true.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Swordsmanship: Ranmaru’s weapon of choice is a ōdachi, a traditional Japanese sword which is supposed to be at least almost 36 inches (91 centimeters) long. Since they were too long to carry them on waists, samurai usually carried them on their backs or in their hands in a sheath.
  • Special attacks: While most of Ranmaru’s attacks are slash-type, he’s also able to make shockwaves with his sword.
  • Musou: Once he accumulates enough energy, Ranmaru can perform a powerful attack with his sword slamming its end into the ground and sending a shockwave of energy forward.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Rantaro Hayashi
AU AGE: 18
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Opposed to his canon height (5'10"), he's going to be 5'3" now, but that's it.

AU HISTORY:
  • Rantaro was born in Kyoto and has lived there for his whole life with his parents who own a small (but acknowledged by many) tea shop.
  • His parents value traditional arts the most and so does Rantaro Apart from the Japanese tea ceremony, he's also practicing calligraphy and kendo. He has tried archery and ikebana as well but without much success.
  • On the other hand, he's rather unfamiliar with modern culture i.e. games, anime, dramas, movies, etc. He knows the most popular stuff, but apart from that, his mind draws a blank.
  • Every day after coming back from school, he helped his parents in their tea shop on his own will even though his parents insisted him to rest or do something else.
  • That's also the reason he doesn't have many friends. Actually, the only people he talked to in Japan were his parents, customers, a few people he attended classes with and Kouran.
    * Received permission for them to know each other before coming to Recollé from Kouran's player.
  • It was a difficult decision, but Rantaro's parents decided to withdraw all their savings and open another tea shop in Recollé after he graduates from high school. They also asked their son to look after it and Rantaro had no objections. However, his parents never told him the reason behind their decision, but it was for Rantaro to try living in a different environment and gain new experiences.
  • The tea shop name he's going to run is called "Nihoncha" (Japanese Teas) and both its exterior and interior have that traditional look. Rantaro lives on the first floor, in a Japanese style one-room flat.
  • He's been in Recollé for two months, but since preparations to open the tea shop were rather time-consuming, he didn't get to know many people yet.
  • Nor places. On top of that, with his terrible sense of direction, he's getting lost pretty easily.
AU PERSONALITY:
Rantaro's personality isn't that much different from Ranmaru's, actually. Just like his canon counterpart, he's devoted and takes his role of a son quite seriously. His willingness to help his parents at all times and not thinking about himself that is exactly the reason why they decided to take matters into their own hands and send Rantaro to another country. His parents know well that their son has room to grow but it's necessary for him to start thinking about himself and his future as well.

Moreover, he's a bit of a loner, and even though many people think that it's because he's acting all high and mighty because of how successful his parents are, it's not quite the case here. One thing is that his schedule made it difficult to form friendships, and another reason is that he's fully aware that he may come off as a weird guy, especially when he's always listening to his parents and not complaining about his life at all. That said, Rantaro's also rather quiet. Strangely enough, he has absolutely no problem with talking to customers and small talk is something he's really good at.

Unaware of his own curiosity that's been dormant all this time, Rantaro will find himself trying new things, just as his parents wanted him to, proving him to be really open-minded and excitable and showing his less serious and a bit childish side.

Contrary to Ranmaru, Rantaro isn't as violent. There's no reason for him to be, in the first place. Even during kendo practice, he's trying not to go too hard on the opponent. This approach doesn't always pay off, but he wouldn't stand it if he physically hurt someone, even on accident.
